29erXX sailors tested the first downhill skiff cross during this morning's postponement. The course is short and features tight jibing for two boats at a time. The racing was exciting for both the sailors and spectators. Part-way through the breeze filled and the day's racing for the European Championship began. The wind and wave picked up quickly and the racers
started in 20 knots. Big waves made for exciting downwind runs and kept the sailors trapping hard off the back of the boat. In this "kite-optional" breeze, Spain's Laura and the Netherlands Femke chose to two-sail downhill and passed some swimmers for a 3rd place finish.
Due to accellerating conditions, the Race Committee hoisted AP over H and the fleet went for a wild-ride in. Landing at the beach was arguably the most difficult part of the day!
Norway's Ane and Helene took a few spills, but managed to sail in without assistance. "We never gave up. And we were FLYING!" they exclaimed upon reaching shore, where 10 sailors lifted their boat out of the water and everyone helped to de-rig.
A special thanks to Club Vela La Ballena Alegre for being fantastic hosts, and to our top-notch race committee (who have already requested we come back for our next event)!
Congratulations to 29er and 29erXX European Championships Annemiek Bekkering and Kaj Bocker for a job well done.
